Spending the whole of my summer vacation on the beach has never really been my ideal vacation. Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy a relaxing visit to a beach, but, I also like to travel a little inland too. I really like to spend time just soaking in the atmosphere of the place, I really like to indulge in the local foods and sampling the culture. In truth I just like to experience something new each year and I try extremely hard attempting to find something 100% unique. This is the most probable reason why I enjoy visits to the Hebridean island named the Isle of Harris and why I frequently choose to hire self catering cottages on Harris.

Harris is a small island situated just off the west coast of Scotland. The island is one of over three hundred of little islandsĀ  which are commonly referred to as the Outer Hebrides, although to be one hundred percent correct the UK postal address is the Western Isles. Known as either/or the Outer Hebrides or the Western Isles the islands are beautiful in the extreme and amazingly unique. For those people who need to spend time relaxing on a beach with golden sand the Isle of Harris has a multitude to choose from and virtually all are spectacular and frequently deserted. It sometimes feels as though ’round bend in the road you are met with an awesome sight. The Harris roads are rather different to those found on the Scottish mainland in some areas the roads are single track and you will will be required to use passing places to allow oncoming traffic to pass but also to let traffic from behind to pass. Simply stop on the left hand side of the road. However, if the vehicle wishing to get past you is very large and the passing place is on your right you may carefully pull over into to it to let the said vehicle pass easily but at all times be careful not to drive off the edge of the road too much.

One of the most common reasonsĀ  for visiting the Isle of Harris is to enjoy the the culture and landscape of the islands. The culture of the Isle of Harris has, over 100’s of years been strongly influenced by the Scottish, English, Celtic and Norse races. Today in general most people speak in the Gaelic language and although some speak English, it is commonly their second language. The Harris inhabitants are amongst the friendliest on planet earth and the hospitality is extremely well known. The people of Harris are justifiably proud of the immensely beautiful Harris countryside and go to some length to keep the place clean and tidy so it is immensely important clean up after yourself.

All along the south west coast of the Isle of Harris you will find some of the most beautiful golden sandy beaches in all of Scotland, and many people say the whole of Great Britain. You will, most probably, notice how crystal clear the waters are and it is true to say that the Isle of Harris beaches are amazingly clean. Unfortunately it is impossible to avoid debris washing up from Atlantic shipping but thankfully there isn’t alot.
