Inverness, widely referred to as the capital of the Highlands of Scotland, was granted city status in the year two thousand and one and at the moment is the only city to be found in the Highlands of Scotland. Unusually Inverness has no legal boundaries which can create problems with population  estimation. The calculations are made less accurate because of the fact that the population of the city is increasing, the city has the highest growth rate for any city in the UK. One certainty we know of is that the city has a very content population, in a 2008 survey by the Telegraph.co.uk, about the quality of life in 189 cities in Great Britain, Inverness came 5th.
