Making Scented Candles is Easy..  Right?

Some of my fondest memories of my childhood are of making scented candles at home in the 1960’s and 1970’s. We used different shaped milk cartons as a mold for our candles and we also added a few crayons to change the color. We always went to the craft store the get the other items that we needed, like wax and wicks. Oh, let’s not forget we had to buy the scents. I remember that we heated the wax in pots on the stove, and dropped in a crayon when the wax was liquid and stirred until it dissolved into the wax. We made a lot of candles at the same time, and we would make them in layers of different colors by carefully pouring on some more melted wax of a new color when the layer below was hardening but still soft. We made some layers slanted by tilting the mold at various angles, and we varied the thickness of the layers. The most exciting time for us children was when the wax had dried completely and we could peel off the cardboard and see how our colors and layering had turned out.

Our candles from those days always looked at least interesting and sometimes great, but because the molds were usually too wide, many of the candles did not burn well. As a result most of the wax would remain unmelted with the burning wax forming a puddle just around the wick. We had to throw away a lot of candles that had not used most of the wax, but that didn’t matter much to us kids because the important thing was that they looked cool. The candles that we made as children were not very safe, but we didn’t really think about that kind of thing back then. The only thing we thought about then was making the candles and having a great time making them.

Today there is a whole new type of candle called scentsy candles and they are much safer than those homemade candles that sometimes would burst into flame because they got too hot.  You know, a candle will do that when they reach 375 degrees fahrenheit.  Little did I know, you never want to throw watter on burning wax because it starts poping all over the place.

Let me just tell you a little about the scentsy warmer.  First of all the fact that they are very attractive goes a long way.  However, there is no flame which makes me feel safer than I feel when burning candles. It is great that you can change for one scent to another very easy and you can even keep your scents for future use..  Also, there is no smoke from blowing out a flame. That is the worst thing about burning a candle.  With scentsy products I can place my finger in the wax get a burn.  They must be them same temperature as my skin because you hardly know the wax is there.
