There has been a settlement at Dundee since the time of the Picts. The city of Dundee, the fourth largest city in Scotland, has long been associated with trade and commerce. The three primary industries, in the city, were “jute, jam and journalism”.  Even though dundee could be described as a post-industrial city it has something of a mixed economy and it still has a large percentage of its population employed in the manufacturing sector (compared to elsewhere in Scotland), approximately 13.5 percent. Recently tourism has begun to become a pretty important element in the city’s economy and there are an increasing number of establishments offering bed and breakfast accommodation in Dundee and in the following text I introduce readers to 3 Dundee tourist attractions; Sensation Science Centre, Discover Point Visitor Centreand Verdant Works:

The Discover Point Visitor Centre

Discovery Point is a highly interesting and award-winning Dundee visitor attraction which explains the story of the most adventurous  voyages of exploration ever, the story of the world famous Antarctic explorer, Captain Robert Falcon Scott, and the famous ship used,  the RRS Discovery. the Discovery was launched on March 21st, 1901 from the Panmure Shipyard, Dundee. Captain Scott and his crew set off for Antarctica on the sixth of August 1901, reaching there in January 1902. The RRS Discovery is a major element of the centre having been fully renovated from top to bottom. Narrow passageways and steep stairs can cause problems for some, luckily, visitors will discover that there is an audio visual presentation on the dockside.

Sensation Science Centre

If you are searching for an attraction that is suitable for the whole family, then Dundee’s Sensation Science Centre is the ideal place to go. Sensation Dundee is the only science centre in Britain which is focused on the five senses of the human body. Visitors are able to explore the wonders of sciences  through the senses with over eighty interactive exhibits. There are live shows of scientific experiments and on the spot demonstrations, showing how everyday ingredients found around the home can be used to fascinating effect. People interested in surgery are even able to have an attempt at keyhole surgery. Sensation brings science to life in lots of incredibly fascinating ways.

The Verdant Works

Verdant Works  was, in the past, a fully working jute mill. At it’s peak, in the mid to late 19th century, the industry in Dundee had a workforce of about 50 thousand people in over 60 factories dispersed across the city of Dundee. Nowadays,  Verdant Works brings this industry to life, by using a variety of displays which include, film shows, original machinery and interactive computers. This incredible museum once housed three huge steam engines which ran 70 looms and nearly three thousand spindles.  There was also a workforce of 500 people, preparing and spinning jute for it to be weaved in a different factory across the road. Renovation of the building began in nineteen ninety two and it first opened its doors to the public on September the 16th, nineteen ninety six.
